To those who’ve been listening to my heart rate monitor woes, I offer my ‘heartfelt’ apologies. To those of you who don’t know, I have a somewhat weird thyroid gland and I’ve been having palpitations while running/exercising. My doctor noticed that my heart has been skipping a few beats and has made me wear this heart rate monitor for 24 hours . I’ve been told, ‘no showers or baths till 9:45 am tomorrow’. He will then run through a bunch of tests to see if I’m just hyperthyroid or if there’s a problem with my heart.

This means I can’t run or do yoga till this thing is off. I’m the kind of person that showers thrice a day, not because I have OCD but because I exercise that much. I used to be the girl that never exercised. For me climbing a flight of stairs was exercise enough. I was overweight and had serious body image issues. I’ve done crazy things in the past like skipping meals and starving myself till I was miserable. I started running to cope with all of this. It was a physical and mental release. It was deeply meditative and addictive.

Somewhere down the line it stopped being about fitness and started being about running stats. If you’ve ever wondered how I manage to keep running for hours without listening to music, it’s because I crunch running stats in my head. I started doing Yoga so I’d become a stronger and faster runner. Now I’m looking at this annoying device and I’m restless and miserable.

I had a similar episode in grad school. After a marathon coding/assignment session, I got really sick. It made me realize that the human body is astonishing, but it can only take so much. The quest for perfection should end where disrespecting and torturing oneself begins.

Fuck all this shit! I’m slowing it down.
